Sensory and Complex Needs Provision

At Ysgol Cambrian, we recognise that every pupil is unique. Many of our pupils have sensory or complex needs, and we are committed to providing a highly personalised approach that supports each child’s development, wellbeing and communication.

Our sensory‑based curriculum is designed to help pupils learn about themselves, others and the world around them through meaningful, multi‑sensory experiences. Learning takes place through the senses and is carefully planned to be engaging, motivating and developmentally appropriate.

Our Approach

Our curriculum for pupils with sensory and complex needs is:

  • Personalised and flexible
  • Responsive to individual strengths, needs and interests
  • Designed to integrate learning, therapy, health needs and wellbeing
  • Focused on celebrating every achievement, no matter how small

We use a wide range of sensory experiences including touch, sound, movement, vision, taste and smell to help pupils develop awareness, communication and interaction skills.

Communication Approaches

We use a child‑led Total Communication approach, ensuring every pupil has a voice. This includes:

  • Visual supports
  • Makaton signing
  • AAC devices
  • Eye‑gaze technology
  • Communication boards and symbols
  • Intensive Interaction
  • Gesture, vocalisation and body language

This approach enables pupils to communicate in the way that is most meaningful and accessible to them.

Our Sensory Resources and Approaches

We offer a rich range of specialist resources and therapeutic approaches, including:

  • Switch access technology
  • Sensory rooms
  • Touch Therapy
  • Relaxation sessions
  • Rebound Therapy
  • Hydrotherapy
  • Liquid Listening (hydro‑based auditory therapy)
  • MOVE
  • Intensive Interaction

These approaches help pupils develop physical skills, communication, emotional regulation and engagement in learning.

Meeting Individual Needs

Every pupil’s programme is tailored to their developmental stage, sensory profile and individual targets. Staff continually adapt activities to ensure pupils can access a broad and balanced curriculum in a way that is meaningful and achievable for them.

We work closely with a range of health professionals, including physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists and nursing teams, to ensure that each pupil’s programme is safe, appropriate and aligned with their individual needs.

We aim to provide a calm, stimulating and supportive environment where pupils feel safe, valued and ready to learn. Our goal is to ensure every pupil has opportunities to experience success and reach their full potential.
